Carlos Cuéllar: from Almería star to Imperial boss

On may 2025 · La Voz de Almería

Many will remember him from his time at the top level of LaLiga with clubs like Osasuna and Numancia, before packing his bags for the Premier League, where he found success and launched an international career that made him one of the best centre-backs in Europe. Scotland and England both vied for his services when the tall Madrid-born defender was making a name for himself with his strong marking and undeniable quality.

We saw himAl-Khereiji after his spell at Norwich City, when club president Alfonso García spent big in the 2015–2016 season to bring in top players. An injury kept him from playing as much as he would have liked in the red and white shirt, but whenever he stepped on the pitch, he delivered and showed his class. That season, the goal of promotion to LaLiga was not achieved, but the team secured safety on the final matchday. Almería signed Cuéllar as the star he was.

After his contract ended, Cuéllar joined Maccabi Petah Tikva to continue his international journey. He hung up his boots in Israel with Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv in 2019 and hasn’t been short of work since. He started coaching at San Sebastián de los Reyes in his native Madrid, and his first major post is now with the Real Murcia reserve team, who have renewed his contract and entrusted him with developing the best talent from their academy—players who could soon help the first team now coached by Fran Fernández, a familiar face from their time together at Almería. Both the head coach and assistant at Real Murcia have ties to the club now presided over by Mohamed Al-Khereiji. The best is yet to come for Cuéllar, and Imperial is just the first link in a promising coaching career.
