Carlos Cuellar has undergone knee surgery and will spend the summer battling to be fit for the new season.
Cuellar postponed the operation because of injuries to Richard Dunne and James Collins.
But Villa have confirmed the Spaniard has gone under the knife.
Cuellar, signed from Rangers for nearly £8million three years ago, was a bit-part player for Villa this term with his knee problem.
A drop down the pecking order behind Dunne, Collins and Ciaran Clark, restricted him to 12 Premier League starts, the last one in March.
There has been speculation linking him with a move back to Spain with either Villarreal or Espanyol.
However, Cuellar insists he wants to stay at Villa and caretaker boss Gary McAllister insists he has a part to play with the Midlanders.
