Carlos Cuellar came through 45 minutes of the reserves' 1-0 win over Chelsea on Monday as he pushes for a Villa first-team return.
A first-half Callum Robinson goal gave the second string a second Premier Reserve League victory of the season at Hinckley but it was the sight of defender Cuellar getting some much-needed match action under his belt that will have pleased boss Alex McLeish most.
The centre-back has not featured for Villa since he underwent knee surgery in April, but he came through the first half against a young Chelsea side without any problems.
Ciaran Clark and Mark Albrighton both also featured in the game, playing the whole 90 minutes, and they will also hope to be back in the first-team squad for the clash with high-flying Manchester City a week on Saturday
