Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar from Glasgow Rangers was voted the best footballer of the year 2008 by the Sports Press Association in Scotland, which today made public its decision.
The defender, 26, formed in the quarry of Atletico Madrid, began his career with CD Calahorra, in the Third Division, before the ranks of the CD Numancia. He spent two seasons in the state of Soria, where he only played in six games.
His finest hour came when he moved to Osasuna in the Primera Division. It was basic in the scheme of Mexican Javier Aguirre. The team finished fourth in the season and reached the semifinals of the UEFA Cup in the past year.
Cuellar, who enjoys her first year in football abroad, is a fixed set of Aiden McGrady, to just to qualify for the finals of the UEFA Cup after overcoming, on penalties at Fiorentina.
Madrid defender, who last April 14 was designated, too, like the best player in the Scottish League, has accumulated 58 meetings with the Rangers (31 in the league, 5 in the Cup, 4 in the League Cup and 18 in the UEFA Cup) in which he has scored five goals.
"Such awards are not common in Spanish football, so I'm not used to. But the fact of being chosen as the best player in the country in my first year in this league is a great honor for me," said Rangers player after learning of his appointment as player of the year.
