Cuellar watched his country’s 1-0 triumph over Holland in a Birmingham bar and he admits it will be tough to break into a team which conceded only two goals in seven matches in South Africa but is determined to try.
“I have had contact with the Spanish Football Federation during the past year,” said Cuellar. “It was always going to be tough to break into the squad because they won Euro 2008.
“But I want to play for Spain and I was so proud of the lads the other night and they have been terrific throughout the World Cup.
“It was a fantastic achievement and it will be even harder to break into the squad now.
“But I will give it everything, try my best and have the same intensity and determination to try and achieve it.”
Cuellar was caught up in the celebrations after a late goal from Andres Iniesta sealed the title in Johannesburg.
“I watched it in Birmingham with a host of Spanish people. They went crazy and were jumping into the canal after the game,” he said.
“The atmosphere was really good, like being in Madrid — although I wasn’t tempted to jump in as well!”
