Aston Villa collected a valuable point with a 2-2 draw at Everton. A late penalty denied Houllier team a much-needed win in a entertaining encounter.
Villa made a promising start, almost making a sixth-minute goal when Downing's shot was blocked by Heitinga.
Osman put Everton ahead just before the break, But Bent restored parity two minutes into the second half. Downing cut inside to deliver a low cross and Bent thumped it first time past a helpless Howard and high into the net.
Villa grabbed the lead in the 68th minute. Beckford's shot hit the bar but was ruled not to have crossed the line. Friedel quickly played the ball and flick from Young sent Bent racing clear down the left.
But Everton salvaged a draw with a controversial late penalty from Baines (83rd minute) when Jagielka was brought down by Makoun.
Carlos Cuéllar was on the bench.
