Alex McLeish is happy to have the 29-year-old centre-half available to challenge Richard Dunne, James Collins and Ciaran Clark for a defensive role. “He’s a solid defender. So we know that he can defend. He’s a terrific defender. He did a tremendous job for Rangers up there in his first stint, which is what attracted Martin O’Neill to the player".

You can’t predict whether he’ll still be here (after the transfer deadline on August 31). You’ve just got to get on with things as they are and keep plugging away and getting results.”
Cuellar, who could resume full training by late August as he recovers from knee surgery, is likely to remain a Villa player for the final year of his contract.
