Two goals from Bolton striker Marvin Sordell set up a fourth-round tie with Everton and knocked Sunderland out of the FA Cup.
Following a 2-2 draw at the Reebok Stadium, the Black Cats generated some good chances and dominated the first half, but failed to make it count with Adam Johnson going closest.
But it was the home fans who were left unhappy as Bolton seized the initiative, almost grabbing the lead in the 55th minute when a clearance by Mignolet let in Sordell, who seemed as surprised as anyone and fluffed his chance. But the forward finally scored the first goal from the penalty spot a few minutes later.
Despite a double Sunderland substitution, the visitors increased their lead 10 minutes later when Eagles threaded a fine ball to Tyrone Mears, who squared for Sordell to force his second under Mignolet.
The defeat will be a bitter pill to swallow for Martin O'Neill, who had been looking to book a fourth-round date with Everton. Carlos Cuéllar, injured, didn't play.
