Sunderland chalked up a deserved away win at Wigan (2-3). Steven Fletcher scored twice as the Black Cats came from behind to win a five-goal thriller.
David Vaughan's own goal gave the Latics the lead when he diverted Ronnie Stam's shot into the net. Gardner levelled with a penalty after James McCarthy handled, and Fletcher then put Sunderland ahead with a close-range volley after Habsi had blocked his initial header.
Fletcher then doubled the lead. Getting the slightest of touches to Gardner’s deep free-kick, Fletcher was on hand when Johnson knocked it back to curl home a first-time shot as Al Habsi remained rooted to the spot. It was his sixth in seven games against Wigan and was what Sunderland’s dominance deserved.
After Angelo Henriquez netted with a far-post header 11 minutes from time, Sunderland needed to show plenty of defensive resolve to retain their advantage
Almost 5,000 fans made their way through the wintry conditions to the DW Stadium hoping to see their side make further inroads in their battle to crack the top 10.
Sunderland scored three first half goals in an away match for only the second time in Premier League history. Carlos Cuéllar didn't play due to injury.
