Christian Benteke scored a hat-trick as Aston Villa defeated 10 man Sunderland 6-1 at Villa Park. It was the first Di Canio's team defeat in three games.
After the first 30 minutes, both sides scored in a matter of minutes. Vlaar picked the ball up 30 yards from goal after Westwood's shot was blocked. Sunderland responded immediately and were level just two minutes later, when Rose scored a beautiful goal.
However, Weimann gave the home side the lead at the break, before Benteke’s treble secured a resounding win for Villa. Agbonlahor rounded off the evening with a late sixth goal for Paul Lambert's side.
More misery was heaped on the visitors during a forgettable night in the Midlands after Stephane Sessegnon was shown a straight red card 20 minutes from time. Carlos Cuéllar played all the match.
Sunderland remains with 37 points in the league, five points above 18th-placed Wigan.
"Maybe this is a medicine in some way that can let us understand that we have to play with desire, commitment, otherwise we are going to have difficulty", say Di Canio.
