Sunderland suffered a second Premier League defeat out of three against Crystal Palace (3-1). At Selhurst Park, Di Canio made five changes to the team that beat MK Dons (4-2) on Tuesday. Ian Holloway rotated his complete starting team, for the second time in a week.
The hosts took the lead after just eight minutes as José Campaña’s corner was bundled over the line by Gabbidon after a deflection off Ondrej Celustka. The czech defender had a golden chance to level in the 21st minute.
In the second half, Steven Fletcher made a goalscoring return to action. It was his first appearance in five months following an ankle injury and grabbed the equaliser with a header just after the hour mark.Sunderland worked hard to get back into the game.
But eleven minutes from time, Cristal Palace gained the advantage when Dwight Gayle scored from the spot after he had been brought down by John O'Shea, who was shown a straight red card.
In stoppage time, O’Keefe added a third with a a beautiful left-footed shot. Carlos Cuéllar was on the bench.
