Looking back at Carlos Cuéllar career, the 22 of August 2006 is a day to remember. On that day, nine years ago, Osasuna played the qualifying round for the Champions League. Carlos was a reference in a team that finished fourth in the La Liga 2005-06. The fans were confident and supported their team to eliminate Hamburg to secure a slot in the group stage.
The first leg, in Gemany, finished with a goaless draw, and Cuéllar saw how the famous Ovrebo disallowed him a legal goal in the first half. Despite the result was favourable, Osasuna had to score to qualify at least one goal in the second leg, and Carlos went for it. A corner kick, in the 6 minute, taken by David López, was headed by Carlos, this time the goal counted and the supporters exploded with joy. The European dream was closer than ever.
With 15 minutes left to the end of the match, De Jong levelled the game (1-1), a goal that edged Osasuna out of the competition. Osasuna did not qualify for the group stage but now looking back you realise the merit of a modest club, reaching at least the qualifying round. The only goal scored by Carlos Cuéllar allowed the supporters to daydream for many minutes.
