UD Almería and Ponferradina drew 1-1 following a tight clash which was full of intensity, in which both sides could have scored more goals. Carlos Cuéllar featured in the starting XI for the second matchday in a row and completed the full 90 minutes.
The match started in an excellent manner for UD, with a Lolo Reyes goal in the second minute. But they were up against one of the best sides in the league. Ponferradina slowly took control of the game and levelled just before the break. The referee pointed to the penalty spot after Cuéllar had tussled with Yuri. Carlos was shown a yellow card for the incident and the Brazilian striker scored from 12 yards out.
In the second half, Almería pressed in search of the goal which would have made it 2-1. They shook off the visitors’ domination and tried, until the final whistle, to breach Roberto Santamaría’s goal. The draw did not allow them to move away from the basement zone, but the team’s growth is evident. In defence, UD have conceded three goals in four matches since the arrival of Carrillo. The last two strikes have been conceded with Cuéllar once again in the starting XI after his injury. In their nine matches prior to that period, the Andalusian side conceded 18 times. A cemented improvement at the back should be accompanied by greater success up front as soon as possible.
