Celta claimed victory at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos (1-3), but Almería slipped to defeat with honour, coming close to securing a draw on several occasions. Carlos Cuéllar was in the starting XI and completed the full 90 minutes. The attitude shown on the pitch should stimulate the team ahead of their next few league commitments.
Almería competed, without complexes, against one of the Primera División’s most talented attacking sides. Amid the numerous changes Carrillo introduced following his side’s last league match, Carlos Cuéllar kept his place in the starting XI. The Madrid-born centre-back appeared alongside Míchel Zabaco (they were the only two players who remained in the starting line-up from the side that faced Numancia) at the heart of the defence. It was a defence (which was rounded out by Antonio Marín and Dubarbier) which suffered at the hands of Iago Aspas’ quality in the first half. The Galician forward notched a brace which all but eliminated UD.
However, the Andalusian side showed character in front of their own fans. Pozo halved the deficit just before the break and that lead to a second half in which Almería had chances to level the match. They did not take advantage of those chances and Celta ended up winning 1-3 thanks to a goal from Guidetti. The second leg of this exciting tie will take place at Balaídos on December 17.
