Carlos Cuéllar’s Maccabi Petah Tikva took another step in their spectacular journey this season. Against Maccabi Haifa, in a match in which Carlos returned after recovering from injury, Kobi Refua’s side triumphed 0-2 (goals by Adamovic in the 48th minute and Melamed in the 51st minute). The Petah Tikva-based side have won four of their last five encounters. It’s a sequence that permits them to tackle 2017 in rude health.
Two of those four victories came against the same side (Maccabi Haifa), with an identical result (0-2) and the same goalscorers. The first win secured qualification for the last 16 of the Israel Cup, and the second, which took place on Saturday, allows Cuéllar’s team to keep themselves near the summit of the league table. Right now they are fighting for second place in the table with the historic Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Carlos, who had missed recent fixtures due to injury, returned to the fray. The coach decided to introduce him from the bench in the 73rd minute to safeguard the result, as well as allowing him to regain match fitness. Providing there are no setbacks, he will return to the starting XI soon.
