Aston Villa progressed to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup on thanks to a goal from Stewart Downing in extra time. His shot secured a 2-1 win for 10-man Aston Villa and sealed a Carling Cup quarter-final spot at the expense of brave Burnley at Villa Park. The England winger settled the fourth-round tie with his powerful shot after 96 minutes.
Burnley defender Clark Carlisle had cancelled out Villa substitute Emile Heskey's opener with just a minute of normal time remaining. Villa had winger Marc Albrighton sent off four minutes after Downing had scored - for a professional foul - but last season's beaten finalists held on to reach the last eight.
Villa were reduced to 10 men after 110 minutes when Albrighton (will now miss Sunday's derby against Birmingham at Villa Park) brought down Burnley substitute Wade Elliott as he raced through on goal.
Friedel made a fine save to keep out Wallace's free-kick and then Burnley appealed in vain for a penalty after Eric Lichaj appeared to handle.
In the last minute Friedel kept out Mears' shot and Burnley substitute Chris Iwelumo had a header cleared off the line by Carlos Cuellar. The spanish central defense was the MVP of the Match.
