Villa’s injury problems increased before the interval when Nigel Reo-Coker limped off, to be replaced by Ciaran Clark.
In the final minute, Villa were denied a second goal when a header by Ashley Young was denied by Schwarzer. However, with time running out, Damien Duff’s free-kick was met at the far post by the head of Hangeland. Carlos Cuéllar was on the bench.
Aston Villa will play again next wednesday against Blackpool (19.45 h.).
