Liverpool defeated Aston Villa (3-0) in an unhappy return to Anfield for former Reds manager Gerard Houllier.
Ngong and Babel scored in a devastating opening 20 minutes. Villa enjoyed more possession in the second half but Liverpool were never in danger of letting this one slip. Maxi Rodríguez made the game safe for Liverpool when he added the third in the 55th minute.
Houllier made a double change, sending on Carew and Pires for Agbonlahor and Albrighton, but by this stage the game was well beyond Villa's reach. Carlos Cuéllar was on the bench.
Liverpool strolled to victory, even without Gerrard, Carragher and Fernando Torres, who attend the birth of his second child after his wife went into labour.
It was a landmark night for Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina, who kept his 100th clean sheet for the Liverpool in record time.
