Ten-man Aston Villa slipped into the relegation zone for the first time since 2002 thanks Bardsley's late winner for Sunderland.
Heskey stuck the bar in the first half. He was then sent straight off in the second period after raising his hands in a spat with Jordan Henderson.
Sunderland took advantage thanks to Phil Bardsley's ferocious 80th minute, but were reduced to ten men on 86 minutes, when substitute Zenden received his second yellow card of the game.
The decision sparked Aston Villa into a late rally, but it was too little too late from the hosts, who slip into the dropzone for the first time since 2002. Carlos Cuéllar played all the match.
Villa's next match will be against Sheffield United next saturday.
