Aston Villa suffered its first defeat (2-1) against 10-man West Brom in 26 years.
With manager Gerard Houllier recuperating at home, Villa got off to a perfect start after a own goal from West Brom defender Abdoulaye Meite in the fourth minute. But Villa failed to add to their lead despite having the better of the possession and chances.
In the second half, West Brom hit back on the hour when Peter Odemwingie volleyed home a close-range equaliser. It was his 14th goal of the campaign.
Paul Scharner was dismissed moments later for two bookable offences, but in the 85th minute Mulumbu netted the late winner. He ran onto Cox's pass and evaded Luke Young before nicking the ball past Friedel.
Carlos Cuéllar was on the bench.
